After the first day of competition at the 2008 NRCHA Derby, the Non Pro division lead is tied as Jo Anne Carollo and Anne Reynolds both scored a 217 in the herd work.
Carollo was riding Repeat Plan, a gelding by A Master Plan and out of Lena Solana by Docs Hi Lena, bred, raised and owned by Jo Anne and her husband, Jim, of Atascadero, California. The 5-year-old horse finished fourth in the 2006 NRCHA Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity, then won the 2007 NRCHA Non Pro Stakes Championship. Carollo, a multiple NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, is currently the fourth-ranked Non Pro in the National Reined Cow Horse Association.
Anne Reynolds, of King Hill, Idaho, is currently the No. 1 Non Pro rider in the NRCHA. Reynolds and Shirley Smart, a 4-year-old mare by Smart Little Lena out of Shirley McLain by Ima Cougar, have also seen success together. In 2007, Shirley Smart finished third at the National Stock Horse Association Futurity, and followed that by a top ten finish at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity a month later. Reynolds, an NRCHA Million-Dollar Rider, is the first woman and Non Pro to reach that elite status. Like Carollo, Reynolds bred and raised Shirley Smart.
In the Intermediate Non Pro division, Scott Gaddy of Clements, California, and Sheza Spook Deville scored a 216 to take the lead. Sheza Spook Deville is by Grays Starlight and out of Trulena Deville by Doc O’Lena.
In the Amateur Division, which is based on preliminary competition with no finals, Mike Doud of Phoenix, Arizona, won the herd work on Smart On Base. The 4-year-old gelding is by Dulces Smart Lena out of HR Short Wheel Base by Gallo Del Cielo. Doud recently bought the horse, in April 2008, but the pair are apparently didn’t take long to click together.
Action continues on Tuesday with the rein work, the second leg in the Derby preliminary triathlon, which will end with the always-exciting cow work on Friday.
The 2008 edition of the NRCHA Derby is off to a fantastic start. Derby entries are up by 10 percent from last year, and the event, held in Paso Robles, California, will pay out over half a million dollars in prize money. The Derby runs June 17-22, with the Non Pro and Open finals set for Sunday, June 22.
