Oklahoma City, OK – July 1, 2008 – In 1978, Affirmed crossed the wire in the Belmont Stakes to be the most recent Thoroughbred Triple Crown winner. In 1981, Special Effort won the Ruidoso, Rainbow and All American Futurities to be the only Quarter Horse in history to achieve that feat. In 1997, Roger Clemens earned the first Pitching Triple Crown in more than 50 years. On Saturday, June 28, 2008, Wimpys Little Chic, stepped into history by being the first winner of the NRHA Open Futurity, NRBC Open and NRHA Open Derby consecutively.
The four-year-old palomino, owned by Arcese Quarter Horses USA of Weatherford, TX, and Shawn Flarida won the 2007 NRHA Open Futurity, 2008 NRBC Open and the 2008 NRHA Open Derby - making them the first horse and rider combination in history to score these wins consecutively.
The Wimpys Little Step mare is out of Collena Chica Olena. Her sire achieved monumental feats in the show ring by being the second horse in history to win the All American Quarter Horse Congress Open Reining Futurity and the NRHA Open Reining Futurity.
NRHA’s Leading Money Earning Rider Shawn Flarida, of Springfield, OH, is well on his way to becoming NRHA’s first Three Million Dollar Rider with more than $2.9 Million in lifetime earnings. Flarida set an earlier milestone with Smart Spook by winning the 2004 NRHA Futurity and 2005 NRHA Derby. The duo was the first to score consecutive wins in these two competitions.
