Reggio Emilia, 16 May 2009 - On Friday night, the 2009 NRHA approved Italian Reining Horse Association Non Pro finals took place and fifty finalists fought for the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Limited Non Pro derby titles.
In the Euro20,000 added Non Pro division of the Derby, it truly was a battle for the crown! Once the finals were over, Rocco Toscani riding OT Taris Playdude, owned by Appaloosa Srl, and Cira Baeck riding Gumpy Grumpy BB, owned by Eifel Gold Ranch, had scored a 217. Neither of the two young riders for one second thought that the co-championship could be an option, so run-off it was. The first to go was NRHA Non Pro World Champion, Baeck, riding her five-year-old stallion by Little Gump and out of Hollywood Balloues. The pair posted a score of 218.5.
By half a point, Rocco bested the score aboard his six-year-old stallion by Taris Valentine and out of Miss Holly Gun, winning his fifth IRHA Derby Non Pro title. “He’s a great horse and I’m really happy with the way he went for me here”, said a smiling Rocco. “I’ve been working all week and only had time to ride at night – I guess the trick is not to ride him much! Turly though, I believe my good luck charm is my newly born daughter, Luce. It’s the first time she comes to a horseshow and this victory is dedicated to her!”.
Both the Euro10.000 added Intermediate Non Pro and Euro3.500 added Limited Non Pro derby Championships, with a score of 218, were won by Antonio Cancellieri riding his Smart Chica Rooster, a six-year-old mare by Gallo Del Cielo and out of Loblolly Chic (by Smart Chic Olena). For Cancellieri, who is also a keen working cow horse rider, this is the first major title won in his reining career. “It’s simply a great feeling. I have to give credit to Sandro Frassà who has her in training and who has done a great job with her and who is always a great support for me”, claimed Antonio.
Reserve honors in both the Intermediate and Limited non pro divisions went to Giorgio Tacchia who was seen riding Little Gold Sailor (Frozen Sailor x Smart Little Gold). With his six-year-old mare, Giorgio scored a 215 to tie for the co-reserve championship in the Intermediate non pro division with German rider Anita Ernst aboard her BH With A Twist (Dunit With A Twist x Miss Dawn Enterprise). In the Limited Non Pro division, Corinna Schumacher stepped on the third step of the podium after scoring a 214.5 with Rs Esplendidos Olena (Spat Olena x Taris Poco) between the reins.
Tonight, the first section of the Derby Open finals will kick-off at 4.30 pm. Sixty-one of the world’s elite open riders will battle for the Euro40.000 added Open Derby Championship, for the Euro17.000 added Intermediate Open and the Euro3.500 added Limited Open titles.
